First Office Meeting: Tarique reviews polls preparations
Staff Reporter:
In a quietly symbolic moment, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday visited the party chairperson’s Gulshan office for the first time since its establishment after the political changeover following 1/11, marking both a homecoming and a renewed engagement with the party’s organisational centre.
Tarique arrived at the office around 1:40pm from his Gulshan Avenue residence, according to BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.
He was received by senior party leaders, including Standing Committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who welcomed him with a bouquet.
Also present were BNP Media Cell Convener Moudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel, adviser to the Acting Chairman Mahadi Amin, officials from the chairperson’s office, and leaders from Bogura district.
Following an exchange of greetings, Tarique went to his chamber on the second floor, where a dedicated office has been arranged for him. Another chamber has also been prepared at the party’s Nayapaltan central office. He then took his seat and held discussions with senior party leaders.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf said the Acting Chairman attended the office for the first time on Sunday. “We discussed election-related matters and agreed to cooperate with the Election Commission,” he said.
Mosharraf clarified that the discussion was not a formal Standing Committee meeting, as policymakers and other party leaders were also in attendance.
“We talked about organisational issues, democracy and the upcoming national election,” he added.
Ahead of Tarique Rahman’s return, both the Gulshan chairperson’s office and the Nayapaltan central office were newly painted, cleaned and redecorated.
As part of its election preparations, BNP has rented a four-storey building on Road No 90 in Gulshan to serve as an election office. The facility includes tight security, a briefing room on the second floor, workspaces for different departments and a research cell.
The office will function as the central coordination hub for all election-related activities.
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on Thursday after nearly 17 years in exile. His homecoming has generated widespread public interest and emotional reactions among BNP leaders, activists and supporters nationwide.
Hundreds of thousands of supporters welcomed him with a massive and jubilant reception, while party leaders described his return as a historic moment for the party.
