On Sunday, they made this proposal during an urgent press conference at the Shahid ANM Nazib Uddin Khan Khurram Auditorium of Dhaka College, focusing on the current crisis and reforms needed in the seven colleges.
The students present at the conference stated that the seven colleges play a crucial role in ensuring higher education for students in the country, reports UNB.
Despite haphazard decisions by policymakers regarding these institutions, students are striving to maintain their independence.
While several new universities have been established to improve the quality of higher education, no constructive measures have been taken for the seven colleges.
They were affiliated with DU in 2017 without a clear plan, leading to unfulfilled hopes and expectations. Since the affiliation, there has been no significant positive change.
They expressed that the indifference of the Dhaka University administration has made the educational experience of seven college students unbearable, claiming that their academic lives are being toyed with.
Abdur Rahman, a student from Dhaka College, mentioned that the DU administration has failed to address visible issues such as teacher shortages, classroom shortages, housing issues, transportation problems, and laboratory shortages at these affiliated colleges.
He pointed out that, like the National University, Dhaka University has merely been providing exams and certificates to students.
During the conference, the students outlined a vision for the proposed new university, suggesting it could be called “Central University” or any other name.
They proposed forming a commission comprising members from the new university administration, Dhaka University administration, seven college administration, and education experts.
This commission would develop a comprehensive plan on how to detach the seven colleges from DU and establish them under a new university, ensuring these institutions meet international standards.
He suggested that one of the administrative buildings from the seven colleges could serve as the administrative headquarters for the new university.
Additionally, he emphasized the need to appoint a sufficient number of officials in various departments, including the registrar’s office and examination control office, to effectively manage educational activities in the seven colleges.
