A violent clash erupted around noon on Monday when hundreds of students from Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul College attacked Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College morning, causing extensive damage and looting.
Over 50 individuals were injured on the spot.
The situation escalated as locals joined the students of Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College in countering the attack. Vehicular movement in the area came to a standstill as law enforcement attempted to control the chaos.
Meanwhile, police have filed a case against 8,000 students of Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College and other colleges for vandalism and stealing loaded magazines.
Many people had been spreading misinformation on social media saying several students had died, but this was not true, said Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner of DMP.
In response, six platoons of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) were deployed in the Jatrabari and Demra areas of Dhaka to restore order. The deployment was confirmed by Md Shariful Islam, Public Relations Officer at BGB headquarters, on Monday evening.
The attack on Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College was reportedly in retaliation for Sunday’s incident, where students of the college and others vandalised Dhaka National Medical College Hospital (DNMCH) and neighbouring institutions. This followed the death of DMRC student Abhijit Halder, allegedly due to “wrong treatment” at the hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported significant vandalism at the 10-storey building of Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College, with computers, furniture, and money looted. Seven injured individuals were seen being carried away during the clashes.
