Student orgs protest at DU

DU Correspondent :
Bangladesh ChhatraFederation and Democratic Students’ Force (DSF) staged a protest on Dhaka University campus over the suicide of Fairuz Avantika, a student of Jagannath University (JnU), by hanging herself after posting a status on Facebook.

Calling that it is a ‘technical murder’ and she was forced to commit suicide, the leaders and activists of the student’s organizations protested on Saturday at the foot of anti-terrorism Raju sculpture of Dhaka University (DU) and demanded exemplary punishment.

The JnU student Abontika committed suicide on Friday and earlier she posted on Facebook that law department student Raihan Siddique Amman had sexually harassed her, and when she informed it to Dean Islam, assistant proctor of the university, he verbally abused her instead of taking action against Raihan.

The JnU administration however suspended management studies department assistant professor Deen Islam following the accident and suspended Raihan Siddique also.

Saikot Arif, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, said, “Those who are in the university administration, they deem themselves as land lords.

And they also have baton forces (Lathial Bahini), whatever these baton forces do they don’t take any action.”

“A worsen situation that has been created in the country as a whole, there is an attempt to find out the fault of the person who is tortured.

If people erupt against it, the none or two incident is taken in to action for only showing people,” he added.

Saying that it was technical murder, Rifat Rashid, a member of the DSF, said, “Hundreds of Abontika are being disgraced in this way today.

He protested all this by committing suicide. He sacrificed himself on behalf of the oppressed seeking the justice of the oppressor.”
