A court on Wednesday granted bail to journalist Shafik Rehman in a case filed over an alleged plot to abduct and kill Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the USA.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shadbir Yearsir Soufan Chowdhury passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Shafik’s counsel Sanaullah Miah. The bail will remain effective until the submission of police report in the case.
Earlier on December 8, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court asked Shafik Rehman to move to the lower court for extending his bail in the case.
Following a petition filed seeking revision of its earlier order and extension of bail, the four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, ordered the trial court to consider his bail petition.
SC asked the lower court to grant Shafik Rehman bail in the case until the submission of police report.
On August 31, SC granted a three-month bail to Shafik Rehman in the case.
On April 16, detectives arrested Shafik Rehman, former editor of the Bangla daily Jaijaidin from his Eskaton Garden residence in the city.
Shafik Rehman was shown arrested in a criminal conspiracy case filed with Paltan Police Station on August 3, 2015 in connection with the attempt to abduct and kill Joy.
