Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul has assured that the next general election will be held promptly after implementing key reforms.

Speaking at a media conference titled “100 Days of the Interim Government: Law Ministry’s Accountability” at the secretariat on Tuesday, he outlined the ministry’s activities since the interim government took office on 8 August.

This followed the fall of the Awami League regime on 5 August amid a student-led uprising.Responding to questions regarding the election timeline, Nazrul remarked, “This is not a matter for the Law Ministry.

However, let me assure you – we will conduct elections as soon as possible after implementing essential reforms.

We aim to prevent staged elections like before and ensure that no one can manipulate the process after coming to power. We have no ambitions beyond this.”

He emphasised that the members of the interim government are eager to return to their respective professions and have no desire to prolong their time in power.

Nazrul criticised Awami League leaders for remaining silent about Sheikh Hasina’s actions before her departure. “She abandoned her party’s leaders and activists and fled the country. She even sent her relatives abroad three days prior to leaving. AL leaders and activists should demand an explanation from her,” he said.
Regarding ongoing student protests at Government Titumir College, the adviser stated that while the government is closely monitoring the situation, it seeks to avoid oppressive measures.
“Public suffering is being caused by irrational protests. If the demonstrators escalate their actions, the government will respond accordingly. However, unlike the Awami League, this government does not believe in oppression,” he asserted. Nazrul also highlighted the withdrawal of nearly all criminal cases filed by the previous government to suppress the mass uprising. He noted the formation of the Constitution Reform Commission, the Election Reform Commission, and the Judiciary Reform Commission, adding that the Law Ministry has been instrumental in supporting these bodies.
