Business Desk :

Bangladesh is set to purchase its second liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from the spot market for 2026, with delivery scheduled for the second week of January, officials said.

State-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) has invited price quotations from its enlisted suppliers to procure one spot LNG cargo for delivery on January 9-10, a senior RPGCL official told a media on Sunday.

The cargo volume is around 3.36 million British thermal units (MMBtu) and will be delivered to Moheshkhali Island, with the option to unload at either of the country’s two floating storage re-gasification units (FSRUs) located there.

RPGCL, a subsidiary of Petrobangla, handles LNG trading for Bangladesh. This marks the second spot LNG tender floated by the company for the coming year.
Bangladesh has already secured one spot cargo for January delivery.

In recent months, the country purchased two spot cargoes for December, three for November, four for October, three for September and five for August delivery windows.

The most recent spot tender was awarded to TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd for a January 4-5 delivery at $10.37 per MMBtu, according to officials.

Likewise, the government has paid $360.99 million against 11 cargos of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) totaling around 35.2 million MMBTu in November to ensure energy security along with meeting the growing demand of the country.

Alongside spot purchases, Bangladesh imports LNG under long-term contracts from Qatar and Oman, as well as through short-term arrangements, for regasification at its FSRUs.

Facing a widening gas supply gap, the government continues to ration gas to industries, power plants and other high-demand sectors.

As of December 13, total gas supply stood at around 2,644 million cubic feet per day, including 872 mmcfd of LNG, against demand exceeding 4,000 mmcfd, official data showed.
