Sharif Osman Hadi, one of the faces of the 24th student uprising and a potential candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was laid to eternal rest beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam near the Dhaka University Central Mosque on Saturday afternoon.
He died Thursday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore after battling for life for seven days.
On December 12 (Friday) Hadi was critically injured in a shooting by terrorists in the city’s Box Culvert Road in Purana Paltan, just a day after the announcement of the schedule for the 13th National elections.
He was immediately rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment and later to Evercare Hospital.
Then he was taken to Singapore by air ambulance on a government initiative for better treatment.
But despite the best efforts of doctors at home and abroad, the convener of the Inqilab Mancha, passed away.
The namaz-e-janaza of Osman Hadi was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, with thousands of people in attendance. Hadi’s elder brother Abu Bakar Siddique led the Janaza that began at around 2:30pm.
Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus, who attended the Janaza, paid tribute to Sharif Osman Hadi, saying he would never be forgotten and would remain with us for generations.
Every political party and organization that participated in the July uprising, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, has expressed condolences over the death of Osman Hadi.
In a statement, the interim government called on all citizens of the country to “resolutely remain vigilant against all forms of violence perpetrated by a few isolated extremist groups.”
Although the police have arrested and interrogated several people suspected of being involved in the murder, the sad truth is that the main accused who shot Osman Hadi is Faisal Karim Masud alias Daud Khan alias Rahul, and his associate, motorcycle driver Alamgir Sheikh, have not yet been arrested.
Among them, Faisal is a leader of the banned Chhatra League and Alamgir is a leader of the Jubo League. Investigators say that both of them have fled across the border to India. We believe this is a major intelligence failure.
We express our deep condolences on the martyrdom of Sharif Osman Hadi, a July fighter and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha. We pray for the eternal peace of his soul. We believe that his martyrdom will not go in vain.
The country will move forward on his desired path. At the same time, we demand the immediate arrest and maximum punishment of his killers.
