Nor’wester with hailstorm, lightning awakens Dhaka dwellers at night

With hailstones the size of cricket balls in some places, the nor’wester lasted almost an hour.
Similar weather conditions were reported in many other districts across the country, including Comilla, Narsingdi, Narayanganj, and Mymensingh.
Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir said: “This is the month of thunderstorms, the month of nor’wester. Such a storm is normal at this time. There will be occasional storms in this month.”
Regarding the temperature, he said: “The temperature is low today (Sunday) as it has been raining for several days. However, if the rain decreases, the temperature will rise.”
According to the Meteorological Department, the extension of western low pressure is located in West Bengal and surrounding areas. Seasonal normal low pressure is present over the South Bay of Bengal.
In the last 24 hours since 6am on Saturday, the highest rainfall in the country has been 63mm in Nikli in Kishoreganj.
Besides, 28mm of rain was recorded in Dhaka, 21mm in Srimangal of Moulvibazar, 20mm in Rajarhat of Kurigram, 18mm in Mymensingh and Rangpur, 14mm in Sylhet, 13mm in Netrakona and Syedpur, 9mm in Rangamati, 6mm in Feni, 2mm in Maijdee Court and Tentulia of Noakhali, 1mm in Comilla and Chandpur.
On Saturday evening, the Meteorological Office had predicted thundershowers in seven divisions including Dhaka. River ports in those areas were ordered to display warning signal No. 1, reporting gale force winds of up to 60km per hour.
Meanwhile, the forecast for the next 24 hours from 6am on Sunday said that there may be rain with temporary gusty wind or rain with thunder in one or two places of Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
Elsewhere in the country, the weather will remain mainly dry with partly cloudy sky. However, day and night temperatures may increase by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius across the country. According to Monday’s forecast, rain with temporary gusts of wind or thunder may occur at some places in Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at two places in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions.
In addition, Tuesday’s forecast says that there may be temporary gusts of wind or rain with thunder in some places in Dhaka,Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in two places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions.
