Sarjis Alam, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stated in a Facebook post on Monday that the Awami League should not be allowed to participate in any elections until it is held accountable for committing acts of genocide.
“If necessary, a second uprising will occur,” he wrote in the post.
Earlier the same day, Hasnat Abdullah, the convener of the movement, also criticised the Awami League in a Facebook post.
He wrote, “Aspiring to climb to the seat of power by trampling over the blood of the youth and making Delhi the ultimate arbitrator is a betrayal of the people’s intent for liberation.
History will mark those who attempt to rehabilitate the Awami League as enemies of the people.”
He further added, “Those who uphold the spirit of the July uprising and reflect the hopes and aspirations of the masses can only have one political stance regarding the Awami League in post-2024 Bangladesh – to demand its trial. There can be no alternative position on this matter.”
On the same day, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, an adviser to the Youth and Sports Ministry of the interim government, spoke about banning the Awami League during a discussion at Jahangirnagar University.
“When we, on behalf of the government, speak about banning the Awami League, some political parties oppose this through their speeches.
If Germany could ban the fascist Nazi Party in 1945, and it remains banned to this day, then we should draw lessons about what the fate of the Awami League ought to be,” he remarked.
