Couple killed in roof carnice collapse

A couple was killed as the wife along with a cornice of the rooftop of a newly-built building fell down upon the husband in Purba Firoz Shah colony area of the port city Thursday morning.
The deceased were identified as schoolteacher Rajib Shil, 43, and his wife assistant food inspector of Hathazari upazila Sanchita Shil, 35.
Officer-in-Charge of Akbar Shah thana Abdul Majid said the cornice of the rooftop of the newly-constructed four-storey building belonging to the couple broke down along with Sanchita around 6.45 am and fell on her husband Rajib standing below.
The accident occurred when Sanchita was plucking flowers from a nearby tree with a stick for worship, he added.
Both the husband and wife died on the spot, the OC said.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to the morgue of Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
