Essentials, vegetables’ prices up in markets

Prices of vegetables have shot up in Chittagong due to the impact of cyclone ‘Komen’.
Prices of essential commodities and vegetables have shot up in the port city due to impact of cyclone Komen and incessant torrential rains in this zone .
Prices of fish and meat were however stable on Monday.
The vegetables, which had been sold at Tk 40 to 50 a kg before the rains triggered by ‘Komen’, were being sold at Tk 60 to 80 per kg.
The prices of onion too have increased. It had been Tk 30 to 35 a kg a week ago now it . was being sold at Tk 60 to 65 per kg on Monday ..
Asad Mia, a trader at the largest wholesale market Reazuddin Bazar, said prices on onion, garlicks, lintels, spices rose because of the damages caused by the recent flash flood and abnormal tidal water from sea.
Trader Md Ripon told that they were selling bitter gourd, cowpea, and tomato at Tk 80 a kg. These vegetables were sold at Tk 40 to 50 before the rains last week.
Ripon said the storm failed to affect the price of potato, as the stock was sufficient.
Potato was being sold at Tk 22 a kg.
Bismillah Banijyaloy Accountant Gias Uddin blamed lack of supply and rise in fare for the price hike.Truck owners used to charge Tk 32,000 to bring a truck of vegetables from Jamalpur, Sherpur to Chittagong.”They are now charging Tk 38,000,” Uddin said.He also said the number of vehicles carrying vegetables to the district also dropped due to the rains.’Komen’ crossed the Chittagong coast early on Friday. It has weakened and staying in Noakhali and adjacent areas as a land depression.
The storm has triggered incessant rains in Chittagong and many other parts of the country, according to weather forecast.
Green pepper retained the Ramadan prices in the retail market. The wholesale price was Tk 50 a kg while retail price was Tk 60 to 80 per kg.Telapia and Rui fishes were being sold at Tk 140 a kg and Tk 200 a kg respectively.The price of Loitta fish was Tk 120 to 140 per kg at Reazuddin Bazar.Broiler was being sold at Tk 150 to 160 per kg while beef with bones at Tk 450 a kg and without bones at Tk 500 a kg. and mutton at Tk.550.
