Over 50 injured in Habiganj village clash

More than 50 people were injured in a two-hour clash between residents of two villages in Habiganj Sadar upazila on Friday over the theft of a mobile phone.

The clash broke out around 10am between residents of Joyrampur village under Rajiura Union and Nitaichak village under Nizampur Union.

According to police and local sources, a mobile phone belonging to Nanu Mia of Nitaichak village was stolen recently. Over the incident, Nanu’s brother Ashik accused a resident of neighbouring Joyrampur of being involved in the theft on Thursday afternoon.

Ashik allegedly abused the man at a local market and branded Joyrampur a “village of thieves”, triggering tension between residents of the two villages.

The tensions escalated on Friday morning when residents of both villages armed themselves with locally made weapons and engaged in a clash.

The two sides chased each other and hurled brickbats during the confrontation, spreading panic across the area.

A team from Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station rushed to the scene following reports of the clash and brought the situation under control.

At least 50 people from both sides were injured and taken to Habiganj 250-bed District Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Haque said police fired several sound grenades and tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
The situation is now calm, he added.
