Juri youth obtains PhD

Minhaj Uddin Nayan, a talented individual from Juri upazila in Moulvibazar, has successfully earned his PhD from the prestigious Mississippi State University in the United States for his research on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agriculture.

His cutting-edge research holds significant importance for the future development of a technology-driven agricultural system in Bangladesh. is expected to play a significant role.

He recently obtained this degree from the university’s Department of Agriculture and Bio-engineering.

Dr. Minhaj Uddin Nayan is the son of the late Siraj Uddin from Batuli village in Phultala Union of the Upazila. Nayan is the third of four brothers.

His father was a B.Sc. teacher at Gachbari Jamiul Uloom Kamil Madrasa in Kanaighat. Consequently, he completed his secondary education at Gachbari Modern Academy and his studies at Gachbari Ideal Degree.

He completed his Higher Secondary education at a college. Subsequently, he earned a Bachelor’s (Honours) degree from the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology at Sylhet Agricultural University during the 2015-2016 sessions.

Later, he completed his Master’s degree in the Department of Farm Power and Machinery at the same university during the 2021-2022 session before moving to the United States for higher studies. His research focused on enhancing the accuracy of crop yield data using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Speaking about the research, Dr. Minhaj Uddin Nayan said, “Modern harvesting machinery collects data on crop yields across different parts of a field. However, due to technical reasons, this data often contains errors.

In my research, I utilised Artificial Intelligence-specifically machine learning and deep learning techniques-to identify these errors and correlate accurate yield data with precise field locations, ensuring farmers gain a 100 per cent accurate understanding of their actual crop yields.”

He further added, “Crop yields are not uniform across a single plot of land. By accurately identifying where yields are lower or higher, farmers can pinpoint the specific causes of the issues.

This enables informed decisions regarding the use of fertilisers, water, and other inputs, thereby reducing unnecessary costs and waste while significantly boosting production.”

Regarding the adoption of this technology, Nayan noted that while its use in Bangladesh remains limited, it is widely employed in the agricultural sector of the United States.

As the use of machinery and modern technology in agriculture expands, such methods are spreading to other countries as well.

If their adoption increases in Bangladesh in the future, precise yield data will help farmers manage their land more effectively. Regarding his future plans, Dr. Nayan says, “My next plan is to pursue postdoctoral research and gain research experience”

“Further enriching [my expertise] Subsequently, I intend to engage in teaching and research at a university.” He further added, “In the future, I wish to work on long-term projects exploring how AI can be utilized for data-driven decision-making and management in agriculture.

My specific goal is to develop methods-based on the analysis of field data-that ensure optimal crop production and the efficient use of fertilizers and water, thereby ensuring that research outcomes directly address the practical needs of farmers.” On the success of this accomplished researcher
His family has expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah and sought prayers from the people of the country for his bright and successful future career.
