Thief identified tourist’s devices still unrecovered

A German tourist, Krill Lender Kredil (18), who came to visit Bangladesh’s historic sites, has reportedly had a bag containing a laptop and camera stolen at Natore railway station. Iftekhar Khayer Alam, additional superintendent of police in Natore, said several police teams have been out searching for the missing bag since Wednesday night.

As of 11am on Thursday, the stolen laptop and camera had not been recovered and the thief had not been detained. Police Superintendent Md Shariful Haque said several police teams are working to recover them.

The victim, Krill Lender, said the incident happened at about 4:30pm on Wednesday in the platform waiting room at Natore railway station.

He said he had travelled by local train from Bogura to Santahar, and then by a Banglabandha-bound train from Santahar to Natore. He was due to take another train from Natore to India via the Darshana border, and was waiting in the platform waiting room for that reason.

He said a young man aged 20 to 25 approached him and offered to get him a ticket. Believing him, Lender began talking to him. At one point the young man ran off with the bag containing his laptop and camera. Searches in various places failed to find him. Afterwards, Lender went to Natore Sadar police station and reported the matter.

Mansur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Natore Sadar police station, confirmed the incident. He said the German tourist came to the station at 8pm. After he explained everything, police took him to the scene on the station platform. The OC said police are carrying out an operation to recover the stolen laptop and camera as a top priority.

Meanwhile, concerned residents of Natore, a tourist town, have expressed frustration that the thief has still not been caught, even though he is clearly visible on CCTV.

Dulal Uddin, OC of Santahar railway police station, said police began working overnight to recover the bag as soon as they heard of the theft. CCTV footage from Natore railway station has been collected and reviewed.

The district’s top police officer said several police teams are carrying out operations to confirm the thief’s identity quickly, arrest him and recover the bag.
