IUB hosts symposium on international accreditation for business schools

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) hosted a symposium on business school accreditation on Thursday, bringing together senior academics, business school deans, quality assurance officials and accreditation experts from universities across Bangladesh.

The symposium, titled “Symposium on Business Schools Accreditation”, was organised by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of IUB at the university’s DMK Lecture Gallery.

The event focused on the role of international accreditation in strengthening academic quality, institutional recognition and the global competitiveness of business schools.

The programme began with an IQAC video presentation, followed by a welcome address by Prof Dr Md Abdur Razzak, Director of IQAC, IUB.

Prof Dr Md Mamun Habib, Head of the Department of Management and Principal Contact Person of AACSB and ACBSP at IUB, delivered the keynote presentation titled “From Local Excellence to Global Recognition: The Role of International Accreditation.”

Prof Habib, who is also a Virtual Ambassador of AACSB International, ACBSP Evaluator and Chair of the Member Relations Committee of ACBSP International, highlighted the role of international accreditation in improving institutional quality, academic standards, stakeholder confidence and global recognition.

He also presented a comparative analysis of the standards of AACSB, ACBSP and the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC), and proposed applying “Accreditation by Recognition” under the BAC Act 2022 for internationally accredited universities in Bangladesh.

Following the keynote, Dr Ikramul Hasan, Head of the Department of Human Resource Management at IUB, read out a message from Prof Imran Rahman, Dean of IUB’s School of Business & Entrepreneurship.

IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof M Tamim said the university remained committed to quality assurance across various disciplines, including its business school.

Prof Dr Daniel W Lund, Pro-Vice Chancellor of IUB, shared his global experience of business school accreditation at various universities.

Prof Dr Akther Hossain Khan, Chairman of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, attended the symposium as the chief guest.

A sharing session titled “Why International Accreditation Matters: Quality, Recognition, and Global Competitiveness” followed the presentations, allowing participants to exchange views and experiences on international accreditation. Prof Dr Md Mamun Habib moderated the session.

Representatives from BRAC University, North South University, American International University-Bangladesh, Daffodil International University, United International University, International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, World University of Bangladesh, Bangladesh University of Professionals, Jahangirnagar University, State University of Bangladesh, City University, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, International University of Scholars, Leading University and Uttara University attended the symposium.

The event provided a platform for academic leaders and accreditation professionals to exchange knowledge and perspectives on strengthening quality assurance and advancing business education in Bangladesh through national and international accreditation frameworks.
