DU teacher relieved over niqab remarks

An associate professor of the University of Dhaka’s Department of English has been relieved of teaching duties following complaints from students over alleged derogatory remarks and harassment of a female student wearing a niqab.

Associate Professor Tasnim Siraj Mahbub was accused of taunting the student during a class and referring to her as a “fundamentalist” and a “terrorist”.

Students alleged that the incident took place on Wednesday during a class of the department’s 15th batch, corresponding to the 2019-20 academic session.

Following the incident, students submitted a written complaint to the chairman of the Department of English.

In response to the complaint, an emergency meeting of the department’s Academic Committee was held. The committee discussed the recent incident and the grievances raised by the students.

The meeting decided to redistribute the courses taught by the associate professor among other faculty members. As a result, she has been relieved of all teaching duties, including the courses she had been conducting. The courses have since been reassigned to other teachers, according to the department.

The allegations concern remarks made towards the student over her wearing a niqab. The action followed the students’ written complaint and the subsequent discussion at the emergency academic committee meeting.
