Satkhira shrimp hatchery gets 250kW solar power

A 250-kilowatt solar power system is being installed at Ocean Hatchery, a Bagda shrimp fry-producing facility in Shyamnagar of Satkhira with the project expected to generate 60,000 to 70,000 units of electricity every month.

Of the total generation, around 40,000 to 50,000 units of surplus electricity could be supplied to the national grid.

The project is being jointly implemented by Saima Power Engineering and Genixgreen Bangladesh.
A delegation of officials involved in the project inspected the installation site on Wednesday, reports BSS.

Saima Power Engineering Director (Operations) Saima Sajedul Karim told the media that the technology is being introduced at a Bagda shrimp hatchery in Bangladesh for the first time. She said the solar panels are designed to be folded and moved aside whenever necessary, enabling the hatchery area to be completely cleared while ponds and tanks are dried.

The project will also have a battery storage system to ensure an uninterrupted power supply during grid outages, she added.

“We hope the project will serve as a model for other shrimp hatcheries in the country,” Saima said.
Hatchery owner Abdul Aziz said the solar system would meet the facility’s electricity demand and enable it to supply surplus power to the national grid.

Around Tk 1.20-1.25 crore is being invested in the project, he said.
He said hatchery roofs previously had to be removed at certain times of the year to allow sunlight to dry ponds and tanks.

The movable solar-panel technology will make the process easier while allowing hatchery operations to continue normally, Abdul Aziz added.

Satkhira Palli Bidyut Samity General Manager Azizur Rahman said the government has set a target of generating 10,000 megawatts of solar power by 2030.

He said large establishments and factories can supply surplus solar power to the national grid after meeting their own requirements, with the government purchasing the electricity at Tk 10.50 per unit.
