Dengue kills 9 more, death toll rises to 271

Nine more people died of dengue across the country in the 24 hours to Monday morning, taking the total number of deaths from the mosquito-borne disease this year to 271.

During the same period, 1,902 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, according to the regular dengue report of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the nine latest deaths, three were reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) area, the highest number from any single area. Two deaths were reported in Barishal Division, while Chattogram, Khulna, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions each recorded one death.

The latest figures came as the number of dengue hospitalisations continued to rise across the country. Since January 1, a total of 88,360 people have been admitted to hospitals with dengue, according to the DGHS.

Of the newly admitted patients in the latest 24-hour period, 216 were reported in Barishal Division, 272 in Chattogram Division, 401 in Dhaka Division outside the city corporations, 206 in the DNCC area and 223 in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area.

Dhaka Division outside the city corporations recorded the highest number of new admissions among the listed areas, followed by Khulna and Chattogram divisions.

The DGHS report also showed that dengue patients continued to be discharged from hospitals in large numbers. A total of 1,988 patients were discharged during the latest 24-hour period after receiving treatment. With the latest discharges, 82,335 dengue patients have recovered and left hospitals since the beginning of the year.

The number of people currently receiving treatment can be derived from the total hospitalisations and cumulative recoveries, but the DGHS report separately tracks admissions and discharges as part of its regular monitoring of the outbreak.

The latest nine deaths included five men and four women, according to the DGHS data. Overall, women accounted for 52.1 percent of dengue deaths this year, while men accounted for 47.9 percent, according to the latest report.

The dengue situation has remained a major health concern in Bangladesh as infections and deaths have continued to increase. The DGHS has been publishing regular updates on hospital admissions, recoveries and deaths as the authorities monitor the spread of the disease.

The latest figures showed that more than 88,000 people had already required hospital treatment for dengue in 2026, while the death toll had crossed 270.The DGHS data covered the 24-hour period ending at 8am Monday and was released on October 5.
