BD finish 67th in 46th FIDA Chess Olympiad
Bangladesh finished 67th among 206 teams representing 204 countries in the Open section of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
The Bangladesh Open team collected 12 points from 11 rounds, while the women’s team finished 84th among 189 teams from 187 countries with 11 points recently.
Mutual Trust Bank (MTB), as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, provided financial assistance to Bangladesh’s Open and Women’s teams participating in the Chess Olympiad in Samarkand.
Bangladesh ended its Open campaign with a 0-4 defeat to Belarus in the 11th and final round recently. International Master Mohammad Fahad Rahman, International Master Manon Reja Neer, FIDE Master Tahsin Tazwar Zia and Grandmaster Niaz Murshed lost their respective games to Belarusian Grandmaster Denis Lazavik, Grandmaster Maksim Tsaruk, International Master Artiom Stribuk and Grandmaster Mihail Nikitenko.
The women’s team, meanwhile, lost to Brazil by 2½-1½ game points in the final round. Woman International Master Wadifa Ahmed, Woman FIDE Master Noshin Anjum and Woman Candidate Master Nusrat Jahan Alo drew against Clara Dias, FIDE Master Julia Alborido and Woman International Master Kathie Goulart Librelato of Brazil respectively. Woman FIDE Master Warsia Khusbu lost to Brazil’s FIDE Master Juliana Sayumi Terao.
A day earlier, Bangladesh’s Open team secured a convincing 3.5-0.5 victory over Lebanon on Saturday in the 10th round. IM Fahad Rahman, IM Manon Reja Neer and FM Sakline Mostafa Sajid won their games against Lebanon’s International Master Khoder Akram, FIDE Master El Zein Zayne-Eddine and FIDE Master Hazimeh Ahmad Ali respectively, while FM Tahsin Tazwar Zia drew with Lebanon’s Candidate Master Arkadan Adib.
The women’s team, however, suffered a 1-3 defeat against Montenegro in the same round. Warsia Khushbu and Nusrat Jahan Alo secured draws against Montenegro’s Woman FIDE Master Alena Skvortsova and Woman FIDE Master Nikolina Koljevic, respectively, while Wadifa Ahmed and Nosin Anjum lost their games against Montenegro’s FIDE Master Alexandra Zherebtsova and Woman International Master Aleksandra Milovic respectively.
Hosts Uzbekistan won the Open title with 20 points. India and Germany finished second and third, respectively, with 18 points each.
In the Women’s section, China claimed the championship with 20 points, followed by Kazakhstan became runners-up with 18 points and India became 3rd with 17 points.
Dr. Shoeb Reaz Alam, Vice-President of the Bangladesh Chess Federation and Deputy Inspector General of Bangladesh Police, served as Bangladesh’s Head of Delegation. Kazi Md. Saidul Hasan represented Bangladesh as its delegate at the FIDE Congress.
FIDE Master Mehdi Hasan Parag captained the Open team, while International Master Abu Sufian Shakil led the women’s team.
The Open squad comprised International Master Mohammad Fahad Rahman, International Master Manon Reja Neer, FIDE Master Tahsin Tazwar Zia, Grandmaster Niaz Murshed and FIDE Master Sakline Mostafa Sajid.
The women’s squad featured Woman International Master Wadifa Ahmed, Woman FIDE Master Warsia Khusbu, Woman FIDE Master Noshin Anjum, Woman Candidate Master Walijah Ahmed and Woman Candidate Master Nusrat Jahan Alo.
At the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest in 2024, Bangladesh finished 78th among 189 teams in the Open section and 81st among 170 teams in the Women’s section.
