2 arrested on charges of smuggling in Mithamoin

Police have arrested two people on charges of illegally diverting government-sponsored urea fertiliser for farmers in Mithamoin, Kishoreganj. At that time, 111 bags of urea fertilizer were seized from two trolleys. At the same time, the police have also seized two trolley vehicles used for transporting fertiliser.

A case was filed with Mithamoin Police Station against the two arrested people, an authorized fertiliser dealer, and one other person in this incident.

Police said that an attempt was being made to illegally divert subsidized urea fertiliser allocated for farmers and sell it in the black market; based on such a secret information, a drive was launched in Katkhal Union of Mithamoin Upazila of the district around 11 am on Monday. A police team led by Katkhal Police Outpost In-charge Md. Gaffar conducted the drive.

During the operation, Shahin Mia and Zahir Mia were arrested while transporting urea fertiliser in two trolleys.

Later, the police searched the two trolleys and recovered 111 sacks of urea fertilizer. Initially, the police believed that these fertilizers with subsidies for farmers were being removed outside the approved distribution system.

In addition to Shahin Mia and Zahir Mia, another authorised fertiliser dealer, Mustafizul Islam Ratan and Liton, was charged in this incident.

Police say that the government supplies fertilisers through subsidies and incentives to reduce the production costs of farmers.

If these fertilisers are sold or removed outside the prescribed system, there is a risk that genuine farmers will be deprived of government benefits. For this reason, regular surveillance and operations are being conducted to prevent irregularities in the distribution and marketing of government-allocated fertilisers.

Local farmers said that in many cases, they face problems in collecting fertilizers when needed. Strict surveillance and effective measures are needed by the administration to ensure that the fertilisers allocated to farmers do not go to the black market in any way.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mithamoin Police Station, Monowar Mohammad, said that the police operation against the smuggling of fertilizer allocated for farmers will continue. Action will be taken against those involved in such incidents as per the law.
