Dhaka-Ankara discuss stronger ties

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Thursday, discussing ways to further strengthen bilateral relations.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on expanding the growing Bangladesh-Turkiye partnership through increased high-level exchanges, defence cooperation, renewable and green energy, and investment by Turkish companies in Bangladesh.

The two sides also exchanged views on the upcoming 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31), which Turkiye is scheduled to host in Antalya.

They discussed Bangladesh’s participation in the climate conference, including the possible participation of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

During the meeting, State Minister Humaiun Kobir invited Turkiye to participate in an International Sports Conference that Bangladesh plans to host in early 2027.

The discussions reflected the two countries’ interest in expanding cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic and economic areas, with particular attention to defence, clean energy, investment and climate diplomacy.

Bangladesh and Turkiye also discussed the importance of continued high-level engagement to strengthen bilateral ties and create new areas of cooperation.

Both sides expressed their commitment to further deepening bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
