Speakers calls to enlist ancient relics, establish tourism hub

World Tourism Day was celebrated in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh on Sunday with calls to register the upazila’s ancient historical landmarks with the Department of Archaeology and develop the area into an official tourism centre.

A rally and discussion meeting were held in front of the historic Gouripur Zamindar Bari, which currently houses Gouripur Women’s College.

The Creative Association Historical Society & Library and the ACECC Association jointly organised the programme, with support from the Creative Association.

As part of the two-day programme, an exhibition featuring the area’s historic architecture and a discussion session were held at 11:00am on Saturday at the meeting room of the Creative Association Historical Society & Library at Dhan Mahal in the town.

Speaking at Sunday’s rally and discussion were Engr Mohammad Ali Jinnah, president of the Electoral Committee for the Birangana Sokhina Silver Pen Award and retired superintendent of the Government Textile Vocational Institute; Mohammad Raihan Uddin Sarker was present .

The speakers said Gouripur, located in northern Mymensingh, is a historic region closely associated with the heritage of local kings and zamindars.

The area has archaeological remains dating back to the Mughal, Sultanate and British periods, including the ruins of 12 zamindar palaces, ancient mosques, historic dighis, temples, mazars, remnants of two forts and tombs of historical figures.
