‘Honesty, discipline essential for success in legal profession’

Honesty, discipline and professional dedication are essential for young lawyers seeking long-term success in the legal profession said State Minister for Land and Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin on Saturday.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a certificate distribution ceremony for newly enrolled lawyers at the auditorium of the Chattogram District Bar Association.

Addressing the newcomers, Mir Helal advised them to attend court regularly and closely observe court proceedings, arguments and hearings conducted by senior lawyers, even when they have no cases of their own.

He also suggested studying case files and judgments from old and disposed cases handled by senior lawyers to develop an understanding of legal strategies and courtroom practices.

“Instead of running after money, focus on developing your skills and competence. Success and respect will come naturally,” he said.

The state minister also pledged to take steps to resolve various problems faced by lawyers in Chattogram, particularly the shortage of chambers and seating arrangements.

He said the chamber crisis would be resolved quickly and, if the proposed location was not feasible, a suitable nearby place would be arranged to ensure lawyers could work without disruption.

Criticising the previous government, Mir Helal alleged that the previous Awami League government had been involved in corruption and plundering. He also criticised the subsequent two-year interim government, saying it had failed to undertake important public-interest projects due to inactivity.

Praising Law Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Mir Helal said the country now had a capable, prudent and farsighted law minister. He said the law minister had prioritised the legal profession and had courageously fought legal battles on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Mir Helal said he would discuss the problems faced by Chattogram lawyers with the law minister and seek their resolution as soon as possible.

He also urged bar association leaders and members of the lawyers’ forum to play an effective role in making legal services more accessible to ordinary people.

Chattogram District Bar Association President Tariq Ahmed presided over the programme, while its General Secretary Mohammad Moinuddin delivered the welcome speech. Joint General Secretary Nazrul Islam and Library Secretary Towhid Hossain Sikder jointly moderated the event.

Chattogram-8 MP Ershad Ullah, Chattogram-9 MP Mohammad Abu Sufian and Bangladesh Bar Council ad hoc committee member Mohammad Nazim Uddin attended the programme as special guests.
