Jamaat plans alternative candidate for Satkhira-4

Jamaat-e-Islami is quietly building alternative leadership in the Satkhira-4 (Shyamnagar) constituency, currently held by Gazi Nazrul Islam, whom the party expelled in July over a scandal.

Party sources say Jamaat has begun organisational activities around Maulana Abdur Rahman, a teacher and ameer of its Shyamnagar upazila unit, signalling he would be nominated if the seat becomes vacant – whether through a by-election or the next national polls.

Since receiving this indication, Abdur Rahman has stepped up his public outreach in the area.

Other names reportedly under consideration include Satkhira district Jamaat ameer Shahidul Islam (Mukul) and Central Working Committee member Maulana Khalilur Rahman Madani.

The party will not confirm a candidate until the Election Commission formally declares the seat vacant.

The controversy began in late July, when a video showing Nazrul in an intimate position with a young woman circulated on social media.

He later identified her as his second wife, Mariam Begum. Amid public criticism, Jamaat launched an internal investigation and, at an emergency Central Executive Council meeting on 22 July, expelled him under Article 62 of its constitution, citing a moral lapse.

The party then wrote to both the Speaker of Parliament and the Election Commission seeking his removal as MP and a by-election – but neither body has acted yet.

The situation escalated further when Mariam Begum died by suicide on Sunday; Nazrul is currently in police remand.

Some party well-wishers reportedly urged him to resign and seek reconciliation with Jamaat, but he refused and has instead sought to retain his seat – a stance that has only accelerated the party’s search for a replacement.

Satkhira district holds four parliamentary seats, all won by Jamaat in the 13th general election. Party leaders describe their organisational base across the district as strong, with Satkhira-4 seen as their strongest constituency.

Nazrul won the seat with 106,913 votes against BNP’s Md Moniruzzaman, who received 85,426 votes. He had previously represented the constituency in 1991 and 1996.
