Mariam’s Death Case against Gazi Nazrul handed to DB

The case alleging abetment of suicide filed against Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam over the death of his second wife, Mariam, has been handed over to Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police. DMP Detective Branch Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed this on Tuesday.

Shafiqul Islam said the abetment-of-suicide case over Mariam’s death had been transferred to DB. DB police will now question Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam.

Earlier, in this case, the court had granted a four-day remand for the arrested Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for his first wife, Maksuda Begum.

The remand order was issued by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam after a hearing on Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi presented the state’s case for the remand of the accused. Defence lawyer Mahbubur Rahman, among several others, argued for the remand to be cancelled and for bail.

It may be recalled that Mariam’s body was recovered on Sunday night from Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban, under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital.

On receiving the news, police recovered the body. Nazrul and his first wife, who were at the flat at the time, were taken to the police station. Mariam’s father was also present at the time. After he filed the case, police showed the MP and his first wife as arrested.
