Traditional boat race concludes in Gabtoli

A traditional boat race competition for the year 2026 was successfully held on the Ichamati River at Tarunihat in Baliadighi union of Gabtoli upazila in Bogura district on Monday.

The event, aimed at reviving the lost heritage of rural Bengal, drew a massive crowd and was marked by great enthusiasm.

After several rounds of competition, the boat named “Rakhe Allah Mare Ke” secured first place, while the boat named “Bijoy Ullash” took second place.

Mst. Sahmina Akter Ruma, former Female Vice-Chairman of Gabtoli Upazila Parishad and General Secretary of the Upazila Mohila Dal, spoke as an invited guest at the closing ceremony organized by the No. 10 Baliadighi Union BNP and its affiliated wings.

Presided over by Jahidul Islam, Organising Secretary of Baliadighi Union BNP, the event featured speeches from special guests including Upazila BNP Vice-President Nabir Hossain Akand, Acting General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Rokon.

Joint General Secretary Rafiqul Islam, Agriculture Affairs Secretary Babul Mondal, former Chairman of Mahishaban Union Parishad Motahar Hossain Mondal, BNP leader Khorshed Alam, Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal Joint Convener Iliyas Mahmud Ujjal.

Union Swechchhasebak Dal Convener Rezaul Karim Ribon, Union Jubo Dal Senior Joint Convener AKM Towrat Hossain Pilot, Union Swechchhasebak Dal Member Secretary Shahidul Islam, Boat Race Celebration Committee President Jahangir Alam and General Secretary Md. Sajib Prang, Baliadighi Union Sramik Dal President Ujjal Hossain, former Union Chhatra Dal Convener Noman Babu, and Mohila Dal leaders Nazma Begum, Majeda Yasmin Tuni, Lipi Akter Asha, Sabina Begum, Shabana Begum, and Parul Begum.

Following the race, the guests awarded prizes-one cow each-to the owners of the champion and runner-up boats.

A fair was also held at the Tarunihat grounds to mark the occasion of the boat race. A massive crowd of hundreds of thousands flocked to the fair.

The two-day event drew a vast gathering of people of all ages-including the elderly, men, women, and youth. A festive atmosphere prevailed along both banks of the river, centered around the boat racing competition.

The entire Ichamati River came alive with the rhythmic beat of oars, the spirited shouts of the boatmen, and the lively sound of drums.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators enjoyed the rhythmic movement of boats arriving from various areas and marveled at the boatmen’s skillful maneuvering.
