Jinnat puts BD on Asian Games medal tally

Female Wushu athlete Jinnat Akter has put Bangladesh on the medal tally at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan on Tuesday.

An individual medal for a representative of the ‘Red and Green’ at the Asian Games after 40 years.

On Tuesday, Jinnat’s Indonesian opponent in the women’s 52kg quarter-final was disqualified for failing to make weight; as a result, the Bangladeshi Wushu athlete advanced to the semi-finals and secured a Bronze medal.

The Bangladesh Army’s Wushu athlete Jinnat will face a Chinese opponent in the Semi-finals today. According to the Games’ rules, reaching the semi-finals in Wushu guarantees a Bronze medal.

Since 2019, this teenage girl from Netrokona has never finished lower than first place in national championships. Having won seven gold medals, Jinnat is returning with a medal after competing in an international event for the first time.

Jinnat Akter said, “I was mentally prepared to fight. The match didn’t take place, but the medal is assured. I cannot express in words just how happy I am.”

Dildar Hasan Dilu, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Wushu Association, said, “In the quarter-final, Jinnat’s opponent Indonesian competitor Florentina Tharisa was overweight.

As she was disqualified, Jinnat advanced to the Semi-finals and also secured a Bronze medal.”

Bangladesh have been participating in the Asian Games since 1978. Boxer Mosharraf won a Bronze medal at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games; this remains Bangladesh’s only individual event medal to date.

Although Bangladesh subsequently won medals in Kabaddi and Cricket, those were in team disciplines. Now, after four decades, Bangladesh is set to secure another individual medal at the Asian Games.
