20 sacks of govt fertiliser seized in Joypurhat

The local administration in Joypurhat has seized 20 sacks of government-supplied fertiliser while they were being transported illegally to another district.

The seized fertiliser was later sold to local farmers at government-fixed prices.

Acting on a tip-off from the National Security Intelligence (NSI), Joypurhat Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmudul Hasan conducted a drive at Dowani Bazar in the upazila on Saturday night.

UNO Mahmudul Hasan said legal action had been taken against fugitive dealer Shaheen Kadir and the unidentified transporters involved in illegally transporting the government-supplied fertiliser.

He said the administration would continue such drives against irregularities and illegal transportation of fertiliser allocated for farmers.

During the drive, transporters abandoned 15 sacks of urea and five sacks of potash fertiliser after sensing the presence of the administration and fled the scene.

With the assistance of officials present, the seized fertiliser was subsequently sold to local farmers for a total of Tk 25,250.

According to local administration officials and residents, Shaheen Kadir, owner of sub-dealer M/S Shaheen Traders at Kuthibari Bridge Bazar in Joypurhat Sadar upazila, was attempting to transport the government-allocated fertiliser illegally to Dhamoirhat upazila in neighbouring Naogaon district for higher profits.
