Classes in tin shed, school grounds flood in rain

Students, teachers struggle amid infrastructure crisis

With 95 students attending classes in a three-room tin-shed structure, Bhatta Pratap Government Primary School in Bagerhat is struggling to provide a proper learning environment as its old building remains abandoned.

The school, established in 1962, has been facing the crisis since its old building was declared abandoned in 2022. With no new building constructed since then, classes have been held in the three-room tin-shed structure.

The situation becomes particularly difficult during the rainy season, as the school grounds become waterlogged even after light rainfall and water sometimes enters the school premises.

During summer, the tin-shed classrooms become unbearably hot, while the lack of electricity adds to the students’ difficulties.

The school is located beside a muddy field and a dilapidated abandoned building. The limited facilities and poor condition of the premises are also affecting regular educational activities.

Ahmed Paik, acting headmaster of the school, said it was established in 1962 and its old building was declared abandoned in 2022.

“Currently, 95 students have to study in a three-room tin-shed structure. Although we have teachers and students, the poor condition of the building and school grounds repeatedly hampers our efforts to provide quality education.

“We have submitted written requests to the authorities several times. We urgently need a proper school building. We have been forced to use rooms in the dilapidated building and work there at the risk of our lives. The polythene sheets covering the roof have come loose, and various educational materials have been damaged,” he said.

Habibur Rahman, former president of the school’s managing committee, said the school building was in a precarious condition during his tenure. “After we submitted a written application, officials from the Department of Education visited the school and declared the building abandoned in 2022. However, no alternative arrangements have been made since then.

“Later, we constructed a three-room tin-shed structure at our own expense to continue educational activities. We are demanding that the government construct a new, modern school building and renovate the school grounds to make them suitable for students to play,” he said. Nasrin Aktar, Bagerhat District Primary Education Officer, said the concerned authorities had been asked to construct new buildings in phases, on a priority basis, for schools in dilapidated condition
Dia, a third-grade student, said, “It is difficult to come to our school. There is water in the field, and it is very hot. When it rains or storms, we do not want to come to school.

We are also afraid of getting hurt by the tin roof. Other schools are beautiful, but our school is in very poor condition. We want a good school building.”

Shimu, a second-grade student, said, “We want our school to have a new building. The school is dilapidated, and it gets flooded when it rains. There is no electricity during summer, making it difficult for us to move around.”

Parent Sumaiya Akhter said, “The school is in such a poor condition that my child does not want to attend classes. We have to force him to go to school. The tin-shed room is very hot, and there is no electricity. It has also become difficult to enter the school. We want a good building to be constructed as soon as possible.”

Another parent, Ankita Roy, said, “We also face a lot of difficulties bringing our children to school. There is no proper place to sit, and the field gets flooded. We want a good building and the school grounds to be renovated so that the children can play.”

Assistant Teacher Jasmine Nahar said the number of students attending school was declining day by day due to the infrastructural crisis.

“We are trying to convince parents to send their children to school. Many materials in our library are being damaged. We are forced to run the office in a room in an abandoned building, where various materials are also being damaged,” she said.
