Abahani draw with PWD in opener, Fortis secure massive 6-goal victory

Defending runners-up Abahani Limited kicked-off the new Bangladesh Football League season with a draw. On Friday, at the Shaheed Miraj-Tapan Stadium in Manikganj, they played out a goalless draw against PWD Sports Club.

On the same day, Fortis FC routed newcomers Chattogram City Football Club 6-0 at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka.

Pa Omar of Fortis FC scored 47th, and 87th minutes and his teammate Akada netted 52nd, 77th minutes and their teammates Ibrahim and Rafael Tudu scored in the 79th and 82 minutes respectively.

At Gopalganj District Stadium, Brothers Union suffered a 3-0 defeat to newcomers City Club. Enamul, Okafor and Rafiqul scored one goal each for City Club.

At Chandpur District Stadium, Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club won 2-1 against Dhaka Wanderers.

Sulayman Shah of Fakirerpool scored 35th and 41st minutes, while Angus John Baily of Dhaka Wanderers pulled off one in the 52nd minute of the clash.

Meanwhile, at the Shaheed Barkat Stadium in Gazipur, Bangladesh Police FC defeated Rahmatganj 1-0. Arian of Police FC scored the all-important goal in the first minute of the injury time of the second half.

Despite repeated attempts, Abahani failed to breach PWD’s defense. PWD also created scoring opportunities but could not find the net. PWD fielded one player from Cameroon and another from Germany in their starting lineup, whereas Abahani played with an all-local squad as their foreign players had not yet arrived.

Experienced defender Yasin Khan has been appointed Abahani’s captain for the new season, though his tenure as skipper did not get off to a good start.

Although the league newcomers, Chattogram City Club, showed some signs of resistance in the first half, they completely ran out of steam in the second.

Playing a match in the country’s top league after only a single training session is no easy task.

And this happened against a team that had been preparing for two and a half months; Fortis had begun training for the AFC Challenge League well in advance.
