Police seized horse meat in Jhenaigati
Police seized samples of horse meat in Jhenaigati of Sherpur early Friday after residents alerted them to allegations of horse slaughter and meat sales in the area.
The horse meat was seized from Fulhari around on Friday after local residents alerted police, said Kanai Lal Chakraborty, a sub-inspector at Jhenaigati Police Station.
Those allegedly involved in slaughtering the horse fled the scene before police arrived, he said.
According to Kanai, local residents had been keeping watch after receiving allegations that horse meat had been sold in the area for some time.
They alerted police after finding meat from a slaughtered horse late on Thursday night.
Police collected around 2kg of the suspected meat as samples, along with other evidence. Local residents buried the remaining meat, Kanai said.
Police have obtained the names of several people suspected of being involved and are working to verify their identities, he added.
“We are continuing our investigation to identify those involved,” Kanai said.
He added that efforts were underway to track down the suspects and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged slaughter and sale of horse meat.
Investigators are also trying to determine where the meat was intended to be sold.
