Dipu Moni granted one-day parole
Former Social Welfare and Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, who is currently in jail, has been granted one-day parole on humanitarian grounds following the death of her husband, senior Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Toufiq Newaz.
The Munshiganj district administration has ordered her release on parole from 6am to 6pm on Thursday, 20 August, allowing her to attend her husband’s janaza and burial before returning to custody within the stipulated period.
Family members confirmed the decision to journalists on Wednesday, 19 August.
The family had initially sought four days’ parole from the Munshiganj district administration following Newaz’s death. However, the administration approved only one day.
Dipu Moni’s daughter, Tani Dipaboli Newaz, submitted the parole application to Additional Deputy Commissioner Rezaul Karim at the Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner’s office at around 1:45pm on Wednesday.
Earlier, at about noon, she visited Munshiganj District Jail to meet her mother.
Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Advocate Gazi Faisal Islam, said an application had been submitted seeking her release on parole on humanitarian grounds following the death of her husband.
“We applied for her release on parole on humanitarian grounds following the death of her husband,” he said.
Husband dies after prolonged illness
Barrister Toufiq Newaz, a senior lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, died at 10:27pm on Tuesday, 18 August, while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka.
He had been suffering from kidney and liver complications for a prolonged period.
After receiving news of her father’s death, Tani Dipaboli Newaz went to the district jail on Wednesday to meet Dipu Moni. She also discussed with her mother the arrangements for seeking her release on parole.
According to family sources, Dipu Moni will leave jail on Thursday morning under the parole order to attend her husband’s janaza and burial.
She will be required to return to jail by 6pm, when the parole period expires.
The decision by the district administration came after the family formally sought temporary release on humanitarian grounds, with the authorities ultimately limiting the parole period to 12 hours despite the family’s request for four days.
