Australia drop Weatherald for second Bangladesh Test

Australia have made one change to their squad for the second and final ICC World Test Championship fixture against Bangladesh in Mackay.

Opener Jake Weatherald has been dropped from the 13-player squad, with left-hander Matthew Renshaw named as his replacement.

If selected it would be Renshaw’s first appearance at Test level for more than three years, with the 30-year-old’s last Test cap coming in Delhi against India back in 2023 when he came in as a concussion substitute for regular opener David Warner.

Renshaw has since featured for Australia in both ODI and T20I cricket, but wins a recall to the Test arena following a disappointing performance from the Aussies’ top-order in the first Test against Bangladesh.

The Aussies were bundled out for just 198 in the first innings of the match and Weatherald has paid the price after he contributed scores of just 23 and zero across the match.

It means regular No.3 Marnus Labuschagne holds his place in the squad, with Australia coach Andrew McDonald admitting the right-hander had some work to do to ensure his place in the team going forward.

“I think it was 31 he got in the second innings, and up until the point he got out, you’d sit there and say he was looking good,” McDonald said of Labuschagne.

Back-up keeper-batter Josh Inglis and reserve bowler Scott Boland retain their place in Australia’s squad for the second Test that commences on Saturday and could come into contention for a recall.
