Mobasser Monem resigns as PSC boss

Mobasser Monem has resigned from his position as chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) on Tuesday, August 18.

Earlier in the day, Monem hinted that he was preparing to step down but did not give details, telling reporters, “You’ll know.”

PSC Public Relations Officer SM Matiur Rahman later said Monem had been suffering from several health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure. He said Monem informed officials at around 1:30pm that he would resign on health grounds.

Monem was appointed PSC chairman by the interim government in October 2024.

Following the change of government after the July Mass Uprising, the then PSC chairman Mohammad Sohrab Hossain and 12 members of the commission resigned.

The interim government subsequently appointed Monem, a professor of Public Administration at the University of Dhaka, as PSC chairman on October 9, 2024.

His resignation brings an end to nearly two years at the helm of the constitutional body responsible for recruiting officials for Bangladesh’s civil service.
