Russian killed in RNPP infight

One person died and another was critically injured following a clash between two Russian nationals while intoxicated, at Rooppur in Ishwardi Upazila, Pabna. The critically injured man is currently being treated in the ICU of a private hospital.

The incident occurred Monday morning on the fifth floor of Building No. 6 in Green City, the residential area for foreign nationals working at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

The deceased, Sergei Nikolaevich (56), worked as an ultrasonic testing inspector for TREST Rosem, a contracting company for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project. He lived in Room 51 on the fifth floor of Building No. 6 in Green City. The injured man, Menchev (53), is being treated in the ICU at Esquire Specialized Hospital in Pabna. Both men worked for the Russian contracting company Rosem at the Rooppur project.

According to police and local sources, the two Russian nationals had been drinking together before the incident. An argument broke out between them over a trivial matter, which escalated into a physical altercation and fight, leaving both men critically injured and unconscious. Colleagues then rescued them and initially took them to Green City Hospital.

Dr. Saiful Islam, resident medical officer at Green City Hospital, said the two foreign nationals were brought to the hospital unconscious; given their critical condition and the hospital’s lack of ICU facilities, they were quickly transferred to Esquire Specialized Hospital in Pabna. Sergei Nikolaevich died there during treatment, while the other injured Russian national remains under ICU care.

Ishwardi Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Ashadur Rahman said the body has been recovered and sent to the morgue at Pabna General Hospital for autopsy, and that the actual cause of death will be confirmed following the autopsy report and investigation. Legal proceedings in the case are underway.
