Prof Mahbub Ullah appointed National Professor

The government has appointed Prof Mahbub Ullah as a national professor for a five-year term under the Bangladesh National Professor Policy 2023, recognising his academic contribution and allowing him to continue research in his chosen field.

The appointment will remain effective for five years from the date of issuance, according to a notification issued on Monday by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education.

The order, issued in the public interest, has taken immediate effect.

Under the terms of the appointment, Prof Mahbub Ullah will not be considered a government officer. He will continue academic and research activities while remaining affiliated with a research organisation or educational institution.

He will inform the Secondary and Higher Education Division and the University Grants Commission (UGC) about his selected area of research.

During his tenure, Prof Mahbub Ullah will submit an annual report on the progress of his academic or research work to the organisation or institution where he remains affiliated.

The relevant authorities will keep the UGC chairman informed about his research progress and forward research outputs to both the Secondary and Higher Education Division and the commission.

According to the notification, he will receive salary, allowances and other benefits in line with Grade 1 of the National Pay Scale 2015.

The appointed national professor will not be allowed to hold any other paid position during his tenure.
Prof Mahbub Ullah is a former professor of the Development Studies Department at the University of Dhaka.

The national professor position is awarded to distinguished academics and researchers under the Bangladesh National Professor Policy 2023 to support advanced academic work and research.
