BUET pays tribute to ex-VC Prof M H Khan

A doa mahfil was held at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on Saturday evening in memory of renowned academic, engineer and former BUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Engineer Mosharraf Hossain Khan (M H Khan).

The programme was organised by the Bangladesh Society of Mechanical Engineers (BSME) at the BUET Council Building on July 25, 2026, to honour the contributions of the former Mechanical Engineering professor and former BSME president.

BUET Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Shariful Islam, BSME President Professor Dr Muhammad Fazli Elahi, former BUET Mechanical Engineering professor and former vice-chancellor of Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), Professor Dr AKM Sadrul Islam, BUET Mechanical Engineering professors Dr Muha Mahbubur Razzaq and Dr Mohammad Ali, among others, attended the event and recalled Professor M H Khan’s remarkable academic and professional journey.

Several former teachers and colleagues also shared their memories of him, including former BUET professors Dr Dipak Kanti Das, Dr Shamimuzzaman Basunia, Dr M Tamim and Engineer Nadima Jahan Tania.

Speakers described Professor M H Khan as an outstanding educator, distinguished engineer and an inspiring personality. They said his death was a great loss for engineering education, higher education and the professional community of the country.

During his 35-year teaching career at BUET’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Khan served as department head, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Vice-Chancellor of BUET from 1987 to 1991. Later, he became the founding Vice-Chancellor of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology in 1995 and played a key role in establishing the institution.

He also served on various national education commissions and technical development committees. From 1991 to 1995, he was a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), where he contributed to the advancement of higher and engineering education in Bangladesh.

Speakers highlighted his wisdom, integrity, leadership and dedication, saying his contributions would continue to inspire future generations of engineers and academics. They also remembered him as a humble, compassionate and respected person among colleagues, students and well-wishers.

Professor Dr Engineer Mosharraf Hossain Khan passed away at BIRDEM General Hospital in Dhaka at 4:00am on July 7, 2026, at the age of 93.

The doa mahfil concluded with prayers seeking eternal peace for the departed soul and expressing sympathy for his bereaved family members.
