Jamaat urges action on gas crisis

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday called on the government to take urgent and effective measures to address the ongoing gas shortage, warning that the crisis is disrupting household cooking, transport services and industrial production while causing widespread public hardship.

In a statement, the party’s Assistant Secretary General, Advocate Zubair, said people across the country were facing an acute shortage of LPG and CNG, both of which are essential for daily life and economic activity.

Expressing deep concern over the situation, he said the shortage had severely affected domestic cooking, CNG-powered transport services and industrial operations.

Zubair also noted that long queues of vehicles had formed at CNG filling stations in the capital as motorists struggled to obtain fuel.

“As a result, millions of working hours of citizens are being wasted and public suffering has reached its peak.

People believe that illegal gas connections, government mismanagement, irregularities and syndicates are largely responsible for the crisis,” he said.

He called on the authorities to investigate whether any group was attempting to create an artificial gas shortage to drive up prices and urged immediate steps to alleviate public suffering.

The Jamaat leader also recommended accelerating the exploration and drilling of new gas wells, maximising production from existing fields and ensuring adequate LNG imports to meet public demand.

He further alleged that the government was prioritising the interests of unscrupulous groups over the basic needs of citizens, contributing to the worsening gas crisis.

The party urged the government and the relevant authorities to take prompt and coordinated action to restore stable gas supplies and minimise the impact of the crisis on households, businesses and the wider economy.
