Housewife among 4 held over Kamrangirchar robbery

Police have arrested four people, including a housewife, in connection with a robbery at a flat in Kamrangirchar area of the capital.

The arrestees were identified as Jiasmin alias Jesmin, 37, Sajib Alam, 29, Ripon Mia, 42, and Faruk Khan, 50.

Police said a group of five robbers entered a flat on the fifth floor of a 10-storey building near Roxy Lane in Mahdinagar around 7:30pm on July 18, pretending to inspect the flat for rent.

They later tied up the residents and looted Tk 20 lakh in cash, three tolas of gold ornaments and four mobile phones before fleeing the scene.

After receiving the information, police visited the spot and launched an investigation. Analysing CCTV footage, investigators identified the suspected robbers.

A police team conducted a drive in Muslimbagh area of Kamrangirchar around 12:10am on Wednesday and arrested Sajib, said DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Niaz Mehedi.

Based on information obtained during interrogation, police later arrested Ripon from the same area and recovered Tk 1 lakh from his possession.

The team then conducted another operation in the Chand Mosque area and arrested Faruk, recovering Tk 1 lakh and gold ornaments from him.

Police later arrested Jesmin from the same building where the robbery took place and recovered Tk 20,000 from her possession.

According to police, Jesmin, who lived on the seventh floor of the building, was the mastermind behind the robbery. She allegedly knew that a large amount of cash was kept at the victims’ flat as she was a regular visitor there.

Police said she planned the robbery with people known to her and received the robbers on the ground floor on the day of the incident to help them enter and leave the building safely.

A total of eight people were involved in the robbery, police said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
