CCC Mayor orders quick damaged roads repair
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain on Monday directed officials to immediately repair roads damaged by the recent record rainfall to reduce public suffering and restore smooth traffic movement across the city.
He issued the directive at a review meeting held at the CCC office in Tigerpass to assess the progress of road repairs, cleanliness, and urban development activities following the recent heavy rains.
During the meeting, the mayor sought an update from Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman on the condition of roads damaged by the rainfall.
The chief engineer briefed the meeting on the extent of the damage across different parts of the city and outlined the proposed repair plan.
Addressing the meeting, Mayor Shahadat Hossain said the recent heavy rainfall had caused considerable hardship for commuters in several wards of the city.
“The damaged roads must be repaired without delay to ensure the safe and smooth movement of citizens,” he said, adding that there should be no compromise in implementing the repair work.
The mayor also stressed the importance of urban beautification alongside infrastructure development.
He said the city corporation has undertaken a programme to plant one million trees to make Chattogram greener and more environmentally friendly and instructed all concerned officials to ensure its successful implementation.
He further directed officials to make the city’s beautification initiatives sustainable by taking effective measures to prevent the theft of median railings and protect newly planted trees.
During the meeting, engineering officials proposed replacing iron railings on median islands with fibrocement or fibre structures to improve durability and reduce theft.
The mayor instructed the chief engineer to launch a one-kilometre pilot project in the Agrabad area to assess which material fibrocement or fibre is more cost-effective, durable, and suitable for the city’s needs.
If the pilot project proves successful, he said, the same technology would be used to install railings on median islands from the airport to the city forecourt in phases.
The meeting was attended by Acting Chief Executive Officer and City Corporation Secretary Md. Ashraful Amin, Chief Cleaning Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, executive magistrates, regional executive officers, engineers, and officials from various departments.
