Rain pushes up veg prices in Dhaka mkts

After days of continuous rain, some customers are seen buying fresh vegetables at Karwan Bazar on Thursday, while a vendor bargains with shoppers as trading returns to its usual pace at one of city's busiest kitchen markets. The photo was taken on Thursday.

Continuous rainfall over the past few days has driven up vegetable prices in Dhaka markets, with most items becoming Tk 10 to Tk 30 more expensive per kilogram compared to last week.

Traders said heavy rain disrupted vegetable harvesting as farmers failed to collect enough produce from fields. In some areas, waterlogging and flooding damaged vegetable crops, reducing supply in the capital’s markets.

A visit to Mahakhali, Agargaon and Karwan Bazar markets on Thursday found that prices of several vegetables have increased sharply. Ridge gourd, snake gourd and sponge gourd, which sold for Tk 40 to Tk 60 per kg last week, were selling at Tk 70 to Tk 80.

Eggplant and yardlong beans also rose to Tk 100–120 per kg, while cucumber prices climbed to Tk 150–160 per kg from Tk 100–120 last week.

Green chilli prices increased by around Tk 40 per kg and are now selling at Tk 120–160 per kg. However, prices of some vegetables, including pointed gourd, okra and papaya, remained relatively lower at Tk 40–60 per kg.

Vegetable traders said the supply shortage caused by rain-related crop damage has forced them to sell at higher prices.

“Farmers could not harvest vegetables due to the rain. Many fields have been damaged, and supply has declined,” said wholesale trader Rifat Hossain.

Imran Master, president of the Bangladesh Raw Materials Wholesalers Association, said vegetables arriving at markets were often coming from damaged plants.

“If water remains in fields, vegetable plants cannot survive. If more crops are damaged, the market may face a bigger supply shortage,” he said.

Meanwhile, egg prices have also increased by Tk 10 per dozen over the past few days. White farm eggs are selling at Tk 115–120 per dozen, while brown eggs are selling at Tk 125–135.

Fish and meat prices remain high as well. Hilsa is selling at around Tk 2,000–2,400 per kg, while medium-sized rui and katla fish are priced at Tk 400–450 per kg.

Traders said prices may remain high until vegetable supply returns to normal after the impact of the heavy rainfall.
