Italy bound tortured Bangladeshi returns from Libya

An alleged human trafficking gang has been accused of extorting about 4 million taka from a young man in Madaripur by luring him to send him to Italy via Libya and inhumanly torturing him abroad.

The victim and his family claim that they have lost everything after falling into the trap of the gang’s fraud.

Family members said that preparations are underway to take legal action against those who are involved in the incident.

The victim, Md. Tahsan Molla (father: deceased Jalal Molla, mother: Monira Begum), is a resident of Madhya Brakhandi village in Jhaudi union of Madaripur Sadar upazila. He is currently undergoing treatment after returning to the country.

According to family sources, he left Bangladesh for Libya on October 12, 2025 and reached Benghazi three days later.

After being detained for a long time there and he was subjected to torture. On return home he was admitted to Madaripur Sadar Hospital on July 7, 2026.

The victim and local sources alleged that Rubina, a resident of Siddikhola area of Sadar Upazila, and two women named Laisu from the same area, were promised to send her to Italy via Libya within three months.

The family claims that the gang extorted a huge amount of money by gaining her trust by saying that she had a husband in Europe and a child in Italy, in the name of completing the entire process of sending her abroad.

Tahsan Molla said, “After being taken to Libya, I was beaten regularly. They extorted money by talking to my family on video calls and showing scenes of torture. First, 2.5 million taka was taken.

Later, another 1.5 million taka was taken by holding them hostage. Now we are destitute.”

Tahsan’s elder sister Mosammat Sufia Akhter said, “We paid a total of 4 million taka. We raised this money by selling everything in the family.

Now we are destitute. We want justice for this fraud and will file a case against those involved.”

Although attempts were made to contact accused Rubina’s mobile phone several times to inquire about the complaint, she did not answer the phone. As a result, his statement could not be obtained.

Madaripur Sadar Circle Additional Police Super Faria Rafiq Bhabna said, “Bangladesh Police is taking a strict stance against human trafficking.

Members of the human trafficking gang have been arrested at various times. In addition to conducting regular operations to prevent illegal human trafficking, public awareness activities are also continuing.”

Locals claim that the tendency of people from different areas of the district to illegally travel to Europe via Libya is increasing at an alarming rate.

Therefore, it is important to take strict legal measures against the human trafficking gang and conduct extensive public awareness activities on safe migration at the union and upazila levels.

According to them, if awareness is increased, many young people will be saved from being cheated.

Those concerned believe that if legal proceedings are initiated in this incident, the real facts will be revealed through an investigation.
