Rain leaves large parts of Dhaka waterlogged

Vehicles ply on a submerged road in the city’s Mirpur Kalshi area on Friday as watelogging was created there due to poor drainage system by incessant rains.

Poor drainage disrupts traffic and daily life in Mirpur, Kalshi, Bashundhara, Badda, Vatara, Mohammadpur, Paltan and Green Road Heavy rainfall left large parts of Dhaka waterlogged, exposing the capital’s persistent drainage problems and causing severe disruption to traffic and daily life.

Roads in Mirpur, Kalshi, Baridhara, Gulshan, Banani, Narda, Badda, Vatara, Mohammadpur, Paltan, Green Road and several other areas went under water as the drainage system struggled to remove accumulated rainwater.

In some places, water entered lanes, shops and low-lying residential areas, leaving pedestrians and commuters facing serious difficulties.

Vehicles moved slowly through submerged roads, while traffic congestion intensified on several major routes. Many commuters were forced to walk through dirty water or use alternative roads to reach their destinations.

Residents said water accumulated rapidly during the rainfall and remained on the roads because drains were blocked or unable to carry the volume of water.

The situation was particularly difficult in low-lying neighbourhoods, where even moderate rainfall frequently causes waterlogging.

Residents called on the city authorities to clean drains regularly, remove waste blocking water channels and take long-term measures to improve Dhaka’s drainage system.
