



Courts in Chattogram and Mymensingh on Thursday sentenced four people to death in two separate child murder cases.
In Mymensingh, three accused were sentenced to death in the murder case of five-year-old Nishamoni in Dhobaura upazila.
Judge Sudipta Sarkar of the Child Violence Suppression Tribunal delivered the verdict in the afternoon, sentencing Arif, Rakib and Siam to death. The court also fined each of them Tk 2 lakh.
In the same case, juvenile accused Maruf was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment by Judge Mezbah Uddin Ahmed of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
All four accused were present in court when the verdict was announced.
According to case documents, Nishamoni went missing from near her home in Tangahati village of Goaltali union on June 14.
Later, locals recovered her body from near a bend of the Kangsha River, about 500 yards from her house.
Her father filed a case with Dhobaura Police Station the following night. Police later arrested the four accused, who gave confessional statements before
a magistrate, according to the prosecution.
In Chattogram, a court sentenced Babu Sheikh, 50, to death in the murder case of child Jannatul Naeem Ira Moni in Sitakunda.
Judge Jannatul Ferdous Alaya of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 in Chattogram delivered the verdict.
The court also sentenced Babu to life imprisonment for abduction and 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for attempted rape. He was fined a total of Tk 2.5 lakh.
According to the case statement, Babu was seen on CCTV taking Ira towards the Chandranath Temple area in Sitakunda on March 1. Ira’s mother later filed a case with Sitakunda Police Station.
Police arrested Babu the next day from Chhoto Kumira Kazipara area. Ira died in hospital on March 3 after fighting for her life for two days.
The investigation officer submitted the charge sheet on June 15. The court framed charges on June 18 and recorded testimony from 16 witnesses before delivering the verdict. After the verdicts, the families of both children expressed satisfaction and demanded swift execution of the sentences.
