Dengue deaths peak in June

June has become the deadliest month for dengue in Bangladesh this year, accounting for 13 of the 18 deaths recorded since January, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

The sharp rise came as five people died from dengue in the 24 hours till 8:00am on 29 June, the highest single-day death toll from the mosquito-borne disease so far this year. The previous highest daily toll was two.

Of the five deaths, two were reported from Chattogram division, while one each was recorded in Mymensingh division and the Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporation areas.

The total dengue death toll has now risen to 18 since the health authorities began releasing this year’s data on 1 January, according to DGHS data issued on Monday.

During the same 24-hour period, 124 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, taking the total number of hospitalisations this year to 5,924.

Of the total patients, 5,455 have been discharged after treatment.
Between January and May, five people died from dengue. Two deaths were recorded in January, two in February and one in May.

Among the 18 dengue deaths reported so far this year, 10 were men and eight were women.
Of the 5,924 dengue patients hospitalised this year, 3,679 were men and 2,244 were women.
