AG takes stand against lawyers’: SCBA president

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon has criticised Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal, saying he has taken a stand against lawyers.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a press conference in front of the Supreme Court Annex Building on Thursday.

A journalist asked Khokon about statements by the Attorney General and Law Minister that the incident surrounding the Chief Justice’s departure from the courtroom was unacceptable.

Responding to the question, Khokon said the Attorney General had no role in representing the lawyers’ position in the matter.

“As the president of the Supreme Court Bar, you know that lawyers have elected me 11 times to this Supreme Court Bar. I will speak on behalf of the lawyers and speak to the judges and the Hon’ble Chief Justice.

Does the Attorney General have any role in this?” he said.

Calling the Attorney General’s remarks “irrelevant” and “unwarranted”, Khokon said the issue concerned the lawyers and their demands.

“He is nobody in our discussion, in our demand, or on our demand. His statement is unwarranted,” he said.

Khokon also expressed surprise that the Attorney General, who previously served as secretary of the Supreme Court Bar, had taken such a position.

“Who is he? How can he take a stand against lawyers? I am surprised and shocked,” he said.
