An allegation has emerged that a BNP leader named Abul Bashar was hacked to death during an arbitration (salish) meeting held over a dispute stemming from a Brazil football match, in Adabar area of the capital.
Saddam Hossain, president of Nabodoy Housing BNP, was injured in the incident and is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The incident occurred around 8:30 pm Wednesday in the Nabodoy Bazar area. The deceased, Abul Bashar, was the general [secretary/member] of the unit BNP in that area. Police said the attack by the opposing side stemmed from prior enmity.
Police have detained three people in connection with the killing. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) Juwel Rana of DMP’s Tejgaon Division (Mohammadpur-Adabar) Zone confirmed this on Thursday evening.
Those detained are: Shoaib, Arman, and Nayan.
Police and local residents said that two BNP leaders had convened an arbitration meeting in Nabodoy Housing, Adabar, over a dispute related to a Brazil football match.
On June 29, after watching the Brazil football match, a dispute arose between Habibur Rahman, a member of Adabar Thana BNP, and several local youths over the beating of drums. An attempt was later made to resolve the matter through arbitration.
It has been alleged that during the arbitration, several people-identified as Ripon, Nirob, Parvez, and Masum-attacked with sharp weapons.
As a result, Saddam and Bashar, who were on Habibur Rahman’s side, were seriously injured. They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Abul Bashar died.
Locals claim the accused are members of a local juvenile gang (“kishore gang”). However, no statement could be obtained from the accused regarding this.
Sabuj, the deceased’s brother, said that as far as he had heard, Bashar had gone to an arbitration where the dispute over the football match was being settled. But on their way back after the arbitration, a group of 8 to 10 people attacked them with sharp weapons, injuring them.
The deceased, Md. Abul Bashar’s ancestral home is in Gafur’s Bari in Nandail upazila, Mymensingh. He currently lived with his family in a rented house on Road No. 1, Block B, Adabar, in the capital.
Confirming the incident, Md. Juwel Rana, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for Tejgaon Division, said that a clash between the two sides had occurred the day before yesterday. Following that incident, both sides held an arbitration meeting among themselves on Wednesday.
It has been learned preliminarily that because the arbitration’s decision did not favor the opposing side, they attacked with sharp weapons, causing injuries by hacking. The incident is under investigation.
Confirming the matter, Adabar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidul Islam said that operations are underway to arrest the accused.
