Riverbank erosion started along the Arial Khan River in Madaripur even before the onset of the monsoon, triggering concern among residents of Mohisherchar village under Panchkhola Union in Madaripur Sadar Upazila.
The erosion, which began near the old ferry ghat, has already affected nearly 500 metres of the riverbank.
Local people fear that if urgent protective measures are not taken, the adjacent government road, homesteads, cropland, and other important infrastructure could be washed away by the river.
Residents said the erosion has intensified in recent days, forcing many families living along the riverbank to remain on edge over the safety of their homes and livelihoods.
Abdul Kader, 65, a local resident, urged the authorities to act without delay.
“If geotextile bags are placed in the erosion-prone area before the monsoon begins, it may be possible to slow the erosion significantly. Any delay will only increase the extent of the damage,” he said.
Locals have called on the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to protect the vulnerable riverbank before heavy monsoon rains and rising water levels accelerate the erosion, putting more lives, property, and agricultural land at risk.
