5 die as dengue toll hits yearly high

Bangladesh recorded its highest single-day dengue death toll of the year as five people died from the mosquito-borne disease in the 24 hours between 8am Saturday and 8am Sunday.

During the same period, 124 new dengue patients were hospitalised across the country, according to a press release issued by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services on Sunday.

Among the new patients, 37 were reported in Barishal division, 28 in Chattogram, 14 in Khulna, eight in Rajshahi, two in Dhaka division and two in Mymensingh – all outside the respective city corporation areas.

In Dhaka, 16 new patients were admitted from Dhaka North City Corporation areas and 17 from Dhaka South City Corporation.

With the latest fatalities, the total number of dengue deaths in Bangladesh this year has reached 18. The total number of confirmed dengue cases has risen to 5,924. During the 24-hour period, 100 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the total number of recoveries this year to 5,455.

According to DGHS data, Bangladesh recorded 102,861 dengue cases and 413 dengue-related deaths in 2025. In 2024, the country reported 101,214 dengue infections and 575 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease.
